A week after hitting the Canadian A+ Olympic standard in the 5,000m, by running 13:18.47. Sunday, April 30th, Cam Levins ran an outstanding 10,000m at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in California. Levins won the race in 27:27.96, just over four seconds outside Simon Bairu’s Canadian record, but over eight seconds faster than Jeff Schiebler’s BC provincial record. He also convincingly bettered the Canadian Olympic A standard of 27:45.00. Levins has now qualified for the Olympics in both the 5000m and 10,000m distances.

Levins ran with the leaders Sam Chelanga, Chris Derrick, Diego Estrada, Canada’s Mohammed Ahmed amongst others for most of the 25-lap race, until he unleashed his powerful kick with less than 200m to go, to scatter the field for the win. Ahmed also finished well under standard, with the third best Canadian time ever, 27:34.64. Simon Bairu was just outside the A standard with 27:58.05 in his first race since attempting the marathon distance in January in Houston.

Levins’s final lap was an astounding 53.9 seconds.
