Athletics Canada is fielding a strong team for next week’s IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships that are taking place from March 17th to 20th in Portland, Oregon.
Cameron Levins is the Canadian record holder in the 10,000-metre distance with his 27:07.51 performance from May of 2015 in nearby Eugene, Oregon. He is also a 2012 London Olympian and NCAA champion. Levins is from Vancouver Island and attended Southern Utah University. He now trains under the famous Alberta Salazar at the Nike Oregon Project, so the event will be in his time zone, which seems to favour him.
Likewise Mo Ahmed of Toronto who is Canada’s fastest 5,000-metre runner is with another Nike-sponsored training group headed by Jerry Schumacher. The group is called the Bowerman Track Club. Ahmed has competed four times in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, as well as a 2012 Olympian.
National record holder in the Pole Vault Shawn Barber will be competing, he is also an NCAA champion and gold medallist from the 2015 Beijing IAAF World (outdoor) Track and Field Championships.
Barber is currently the world lead in the vault and only about a dozen athletes have vaulted higher than him in history.
Winnipeg’s Nicole Sifuentes is one of Canada’s most competitive middle-distance runners. She earned a bronze medal during the world indoor championships two years ago in Sopot, Poland. She is also an Olympian and owns a fast personal of 4:04.65.
Angela Whyte from Edmonton, now coaching in the US is one of Canada’s all-time best 100-metre hurdlers. Canada has had some very strong representation in the hurdles event over the past decade and Whyte has been right in the mix. Eight times she has competed in the world championships including both indoors and outdoors, she also represented Canada during the Athens Olympic Games. She is always a threat.
Brianne Theisen-Eaton from Humboldt, Saskatchewan is one of the world’s best heptathletes. For the indoor games there is a little variation in the program and it is called the pentathlon. She is three-times a brides-maid in world championships competition, she is hoping to be the bride and win gold in Portland. She is however, married to Olympic gold medallist Ashton Eaton, who competes in the same event. The power couple will both be competing in Portland.
Sheila Reid of Toronto is one of Canada’s best middle-distance runners, specifically in the 1500-metre event. She is an NCAA champion. She competed in the world outdoor and cross-country championships as well as 2012 London Olympics Games. Reid has experienced injuries and appears now to be on the comeback. It will be intriguing to see how she competed in Portland.
