A quinary of Canadians ran well Saturday January 31st starting with Vaughn, Ontario’s Justyn Knight who ran a (pending) new Canadian junior record and sub-four minute indoor mile performance clocking in at 3:59.51 at the Penn State National meet. Knight is in his first year with Syracuse University. He posted on social media after achieving the record, “all smiles with a new Canadian junior mile record, 3:59.XX.”

During the Armory Invitational in New York, Black Creek, BC native, Cameron Levins who runs for the Nike Oregon Project demonstrated that he is in fantastic shape by winning the invitational one mile race (1609m) in a second best all-time Canadian performance with his 3:54.74. The record is currently held by Cambridge, Ontario’s Nathan Brannen who set it at the 2014 Millrose Games, on the same track in February of last year at 3:54.32.

Levins followed the one mile race up approximately 30 minutes later with a two-mile victory over Nike Oregon teammate and training partner Galen Rupp who earned the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games in the 5,000m distance. Levins reiterated what he told Athletics Illustrated the day before, “I am as fit as I have ever been.”

At the same meet Brandon McBride of Windsor, Ontario won the 500m collegiate competition in the time of 1:01.40, while representing Mississippi State. He considered this race as a rust-buster and said after the race, “even though this was just a rust-buster, I am very happy with where my speed is right now.”

At the University of Washington Invitational two University of Victoria Vikes set new school records. Both fifth year students Kendra Pomfret and Thomas Riva raced the mile. Riva ran 4:00.06 to finish in sixth place, while Pomfret finished in seventh place with her best time of 4:44.44. She now owns the first and second fastest indoor mile times in school history.
