The annual Times Colonist 10k took place today, Sunday, April 28th, on the streets of Victoria, BC, under mild and mostly sunny conditions with variable winds.

Kenyan, Paul Kumugul won the race in 29 minutes and 44 seconds over fellow countrymen and former two-time winners Kip Kangogo (29:48) and Willy Kimosop (30:02) as well as hometown favourite Geoff Martinson, who finished in a personal best time of 30:17.

After the three kilometre mark Kumugul attempted to break  the field apart by putting in a surge on a downhill stretch on Vancouver Street, he did in fact stretch out his competitors to single file however, a subsequent short and steep uphill brought the four together again at four kilometres. They ran together along Dallas Road (waterfront) for three kilometres into a strong headwind until at roughly the eight kilometre mark, where once again Kumugul drastically picked up the pace, but this time Kangogo went with him, while Martinson held his pace, subsequently losing ground.  At this point, Kimosop was already starting to fade. Kangogo said, “It was a strong surge that he put in but I wasn’t going to let him get away.” Kangogo, held onto the apparent sub-2:50 per km pace until the final sprint where Kumugul prevailed; having raced hard over the final two kilometres, there was little kick remaining as they entered the shute.

Kangogo was being edged towards the fencing over the final kilometre by Kumugul. “I am not going to protest it, he ran well, but yes he was edging me into the side,” said Kangogo when asked about the final kilometre’s extra-curricular activities.

Kangogo and Kumugul duelled in Vancouver on the 21st at the Vancouver Sun Run, finishing first and fifth, respectively. Next up is the BMO Vancouver Half Marathon for athletes as well as Geoff Martinson and Kimosop. “I expect to run a sub-1:05 in Vancouver,” shared Martinson. Martinson’s personal best is 1:05 from the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Half Marathon. In March he ran to a finishing time of 1:07 at the Comox Valley Half Marathon, after pacing master, Jim Finlayson for over 18k. where they finished into a cold headwind.

The women’s winner Jane Murage from Nairobi, Kenya finished 27th overall in the time of 34:28. She bettered hometown favourite Catrin Jones who will be racing the BMO Vancouver Marathon as a training effort towards the Tamarak Ottawa Marathon. Jones finished in 35:21, “yes the headwind was really strong and I couldn’t find anyone to draft off of, but I am happy with the effort,” said Jones. Victoria’s Jen Millar wasn’t far behind in 35:46 ahead of Catherine Watkins and Lisa Harvey of Calgary, Alberta. The latter three finished in order, one after the other. Watkins was the top master (40-plus) while former winner Harvey was second. Third master was North Vancouver’s Carol Montgomery who raced in the next age-group above 45-49. She finished in 36:24. Murage said, “I am happy with the win, but my time was slow because of the strong headwind between kilometres five and eight.”

The top four male masters finished in order, one after the other starting with Jim Finlayson in 32:48, he was followed in by two-time Olympian Bruce Deacon, Victoria’s Craig Odermatt and Kevin O’Connor from Vancouver. Deacon and Odermatt finished in identical gun times of 33:01, while O’Connor finished in 33:06. O’Connor and Deacon race in the 45-59 age-category, while Odermatt and Finalyson are in the 40-44 group. Finalyson said, “yeah, nice day, but the headwind didn’t make things easy, last time I ran this slow I was in grade eight.” Odermatt and Finlayson have finished the 10k distances in just over 30 minutes consistantly for over 20 years, the wind prevailed over these models of consistancy.

Nearly 13,000 participants took in the race. Before the start there was a moving speech provided by race announcer Steven King, who is known as the voice of Ironman Canada and many other events. A minute of silence took place before the start to honour victims of the B.A.A. Boston Marathon explosions.
