Refined Damnation – The War on Sugar

As I understand it and because I may have made this up, for us long distance runners, each pound that we are over our optimum weight, we are penalized 2 seconds per-mile, per pound when racing. If my calculations stand up to the scrutiny and you happen to be in the unfortunate position of being say 10 pounds over optimum weight, you would race 20 seconds per-mile slower than your true capability. Multiply that by 6.2 miles and you have…well you do the math, I can’t concentrate.

Hairscapade – A close shave

Note: I originally wrote this in 2008. I didn’t think it was that funny, but now reading again, I laughed my head off, enjoy:

Hairscapade

In this age of highly acute environmental consciousness, I have become hyper-aware of what I throw out and what I recycle. Sometimes while performing this household duty I get into an argument with myself:

Me thinking: Should I or should I not dump 20 liters of hot tap water into this plastic peanut butter jar to clean it so the plastic can be recycled?

Myself: Yes, because the sea-life (where my tap water goes) would like to feed on hydrogenated oils.

Me: Or should I just chuck it in with the waste and let the plastic (over the next 100 million years) re-degenerate itself back into oil? And the peanut butter feed another loud seagull for a day.

Click on the Humour tab above and check out some of the hilarious content. Currently there is a 7-part series of interviews called Fartlek & Low Things in West Auckland – a spoofing of the name from the legendary book by Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – that dominate the humour section, but the famous series is not just about humour! In it several notorious personalities take part including the main, real-life characters, author and former New Zealand-based bad boy athlete, Keith Livingstone and his twin and even badder brother, who happens to handily make his living as an illustrator, Colin Livingstone.

In addition to the Livingstone brothers, you will find Rod Dixon, a man who is legendary for both being considered the most versatile runner in the world and a gentleman and raconteaur who likes his beer. Currently he has moved in to Heifeweissens. 4-time Olympian, Lorraine Moller contributes. Not only was she a world-class athlete for 30 years, she also wrote a completely self-penned top-selling autobiography called, On the Wings of Mercury. She is also the co-founder of the Lydiard Foundation and the popular virtual coaching system, Master Run Coach.

Contributions also come from Roger Robinson, Paul ‘Crash’ Carter amongst other good story tellers.

Colin Livingstone is a European based writer and illustrator who was a competitive distance runner in New Zealand, representing Auckland in national competition over road and cross-country from the 1970’s to the early 1990’s. He relished fast ‘bush running’ on the wild hilly trails of Auckland’s west coast, long before the days that mountain running was an official sport.

He coaches British and Welsh champion, Tim Davies, a three-time winner of the annual Snowdon International Mountain Race, and top performer at the European and World level. Tim went from being 15th in Britain to 5th in the world within three years of this progressive endurance conditioning.

The following narratives contained in this fourth installment of Fartlek and Low Things in West Auckland are the adventures of protagonist brothers, Keith and Colin Livingstone of New Zealand. Within each of these submissions, madness and debauchery reign supreme, as does serious training talk to do with the sport of athletics.

The Livingstones and company, these raconteurs, were competitive distance runners during the late 1970s through to the mid-1990s, when they ran at the national level in New Zealand and Australia. Now they coach others.

The following installment of Fartlek and Low Things in West Auckland (Part 5) covers, for the most part, the subjects of muscle fibre recruitment as well as an in-depth look at the need for fueling in training. To fuel or not to fuel is the question!

The Livingstones and company were competitive distance runners during the late1970s through to the mid-1990s, when they ran at the national level in New Zealand and Australia. Now they coach others.

One time we went in Dom Marziano’s car, and I jumped over the fence into a Hell’s Angels house replete with barbed wire. It was opposite the Fairfield Paperworks. I think it was my friend Pete Renner who ran 1500m internationally, plus me, Howie, Dom, and Shane Reardon.

Chris: Why risk your life to enter the Hell’s Angels house?

Keith: Well the aim was to get in and get out quickly, just to see what was there – a little fartlek work.
