Nicole Sifuentes of Winnipeg, Man., won the 1500-metres bronze medal today in Ergo Arena at the 2014 International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Indoor Championship. Damian Warner of London, Ont., finished in seventh place in the two-day heptathlon and Michael Mason of Nanoose Bay, B.C., qualified into the high jump final.
After a disqualification in the women’s 1500-metres Nicole Sifuentes won the bronze medal in a Canadian indoor record time of 4:07.61. The previous record was held by Carmen Douma-Hussar from the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championship of 4:08.18. “I’m very proud of how I ran”, says an excited Nicole. “I honestly pictured myself on the podium. I am so proud to bring home a medal for Canada. When I was a little girl watching these meets I was always watching for a Canadian woman just to be on the start line. To be a Canadian woman on the podium is really special.”
Damian Warner finished the heptathlon in seventh place with 6129 points. Day two saw him second in the 60-metre hurdles in 7.70 seconds; seventh in the pole vault clearing 4.60 metres and second in the 1000-metres in 2:37.98.
Gavin Smellie of Etobicoke, Ont., placed eighth in the second 60-metres semi final clocking 6.74 seconds; he does not advance to the final.
Earlier in the day Michael Mason qualified for the high jump final by clearing 2.28-metres. The final takes place tomorrow at 11:30 am ET.
Black Creek, B.C.’s Cameron Levins is also competing tomorrow on the final day of the IAAF World Indoor Championship. Cameron qualified for the final yesterday with the fifth-fastest qualifying time and will hit the track tomorrow in the 3000-metres at 11:10am ET.
