Several surprises in the women’s 800m heats that took place on Thursday, August 15th, at the 2013 IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Moscow, Russia, make for an interesting second round, semi-final. Three Americans move on, while Kenya and Ethiopia, typical powerhouses were quiet with just one Kenyan moving on, in Winny Chebet  with her 1:59.58 finishing time.

The first three in each heat automatically move on, regardless of time, while the next four fastest times qualify.

The first heat was won by Brenda Martinez of the US, who finished a tactical race easing through the finish in 1:59.39, second went to Marilyn Okoro of Great Britain and third was Mariya Savinova, who ran 1:59.43 and 1:59.44, respectively. The next two fastest times were by Winny Chebet of Kenya and Marina Arzamasova  who ran 1:59.58 and 1:59.60.

Canada’s surprising rising star of late Karine Belleau-Beliveau failed to advance have finished seventh, with the time of 2:02.93.

In heat two American; Alysia Johnson Montano won in 1:59.47 over the Ukraine’s Nataliia Lupu, who finished in 1:59.59, while third place finisher Morocco’s Halima Hachlaf didn’t crack the two minute barrier finishing in 2:00.04. Montano, as she is known to do, ran at the front of the field for the entirety of the race.

In heat number three Malika Akkaoui of Morrocco finished in 1:59.63, just ahead of Russia’s Ekaterina Poistogova, who finished in 1:59.90 and third place finisher was American, Ajee Wilson who ran to exactly two minutes on the clock, 2:00.00.

The next two fastest who move on with the fourth and fifth finishers in heat number one are Rose Mary Almanza of Cuba who finished in 2:00.27, just ahead of Lenka Masna of the Czech Republic, who finished in 2:00.31.

The most tactical heat of them all was heat number four, where Eunice Jepkoech eased to a 2:00.49 victory, to Elena Kotulskaya of Russia who finished in 2:00.50. Laura Muir of Great Britain finished in 2:00.80.

Surprise non qualifier is Canada’s current fastest 800m runner, Melissa Bishop who faded, after having taking the lead early, she ran 2:01.91. Her season best is 1:59.76. She was the fastest of those who did not move on.

Margarita Mukasheva of Kazakhstan, who was undefeated during 2013 and as one of just six women in the field to have run under 1:59 this year with a 1:58.96 seasonal best, did not move on as she finished her race in 2:02.06 in the final heat. Mukasheva is the 2013 World University Games champion.
