Race Age: A Photographic Exhibit by Angela Jimenez

A documentary project, shot on medium format Hasselblad on black & white film, about the senior athletes competing in the masters track & field competition circuit in the United States and around the world.“Racing Age,” an exhibit currently at United Photo Industries, in Dumbo, offers a look at elderly track-and-field athletes. From 2007 to 2009, Angela Jimenez, a former track athlete herself, photographed competitors older than seventy in meets across the United States and Italy. Jimenez told me that it was the fierceness of the competition that surprised her the most.

“When I started shooting this, I still really only understood the competition of the young, where you are seeking that maximum, peak performance of your body,” she said in an e-mail. “These athletes are competing against each other, and against time.”
