Toronto’s Shawn Barber cleared his first four pole vault attempts to earn the gold medal at the world championships on Monday, clearing 5.90-metres. This is his first major global championships title.

Barber and Raphael Holzdeppe of Germany tried three times to clear six metres, however, neither could pull it off. Barber won despite the tie as he was the first athlete to clear the 5.90m height.

Barber owns a personal best of 5.93m, which he accomplished on July 25th of this year, which is the national record. He is the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games bronze medallist. Barber is the two-time, back-to-back Pan American Games gold medallist. The 21-year-old earned gold in the 2015 Toronto Pan American games this summer with his performance of 5.80m, which is the Pan American record.

Poland’s Pawel Wojciechowski finished in a four-way tie for third at 5.80m.
