Rob Guy, Chief Executive Officer and Scott MacDonald High-Performance Director with Athletics Canada officially introduced today, via conference call, the hiring of Peter Eriksson as the new Head Coach of Athletics Canada. Eriksson recently resigned from his position as head coach with UK Athletics, where he served from 2009 to 2013.
He is the most successful paralympic coach in the world. Born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden, the sixty-one-year-old has worked in speed skating and track and field. Athletes in his programs have won 122 medals at the Paralympic Games.
When asked about changes regarding how Athletics Canada will be run Rob Guy said, “first off there must be a review process, once we finish the review, then we can look at making changes.”
Eriksson was the High-Performance Director for Speed Skating Canada between 1992 to 1995, which led to four medals during the 1994 Olympic Games. Eriksson intimated that key support for top-level athletes will be part of the review process. Details of that key support were not indicated.
This completes a revamping of the top positions at Athletics Canada, where on January 23, 2013, Chief High-Performance Officer Martin Goulet and Olympic program Head Coach Alex Gardiner were dismissed, on the heels of a poor medal showing at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
