Kenyan runner Agnes Jebet Tirop was found dead in her home in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County. She may have suffered an apparent stabbing. Athletics Kenya made the announcement Wednesday. An investigation is apparently in progress. Athletics Kenya alleges that she may have been killed by her husband.

The 25-year-old won a bronze medal in the 10,000-metre event at the 2017 London and 2019 Doha World Athletics Championships.

Tirop competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and broke the world 10K road record at 30:01 this summer.

Following the race, she said: “I’m so happy to have broken the world record. I felt the pace was good. The course was very good, too.”

She won the 2015 World Cross Country Championships.

The news of Tirop’s death comes one day after the death of fellow Kenyan Hosea Mwok Macharinyang hit the newsstands.
