There were three big races in Canada on Sunday, April 27, the Scotiabank Montreal Half Marathon, which is the Canadian Half Marathon Championships, Vancouver Sun Run (10k) and the TC 10k that took place in Victoria.
In Victoria, Kip Kangogo ran his first race as a Canadian citizen and won the event in the time of 30:11. Second place went to Kenyan Gilbert Kiptoo in 31:13. Kiptoo. Third place finisher was Abbotsford, BC’s David Jackson who out-kicked first master Jim Finlayson and Kristopher Swanson, who are both Victoria residents. They finished in 31:35, 31:37 and 31:39, respectively.
The top women were led by Kenyan Jane Murage, who is the defending champion. She finished in the time of 33:55. Lemlem Bereket finished second of the women in her first ever 10k race. She is a middle-distance runner who specialises in the 800 metre distance. Bereket was followed in by top master Lucy Smith of Sidney; she finished in 35:39, just 10 seconds in front of Alison Hooper, while second master and fourth place went to Victoria’s Marilyn Arsenault. The top-five were rounded out by yet another master, Lisa Harvey from Calgary, Alberta.
In Montreal, Eric Gillis, one of Canada’s fastest marathon runners was crowned Canadian Half Marathon champion, as he cross the line in 64:37. Toronto’s Sam Jibril was well back and finished in 66:05, while third place went to Montreal’s David Le Porho in 68:29.
The top women were Toronto’s Rachel Hannah, who finished in 1:13:36. She was followed by Nanaimo’s Erin Burrett in 1:15:01. Third place went to Krista DuChene in 1:16:35. DuChene is Canada’s second fastest marathon runner and competed in the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The Vancouver Sun Run has some very fast times. Kenyan Paul Kimugul won in 28:59, over Vancouver’s Dylan Wykes, who had an outstanding race, finishing in 29:11. Jordan Chipangama finished third overall in 29:16. Victoria’s Geoff Martinson finished in 29:51.
Rachel Cliff of Vancouver had an outstanding race with her finish time of 33:14. Lindsay Carson from Whitehorse finished second in 33:48, while third went to Kimberley Doerksen of Gibsons, BC. Doerksen finished in a new personal best time of 33:54.
