David Howman, chair of the Athletics Integrity Unit wrote that 60 per cent of out-of-competition doping tests were carried out during the pandemic.

In an annual newsletter he said,

“We have made good progress with our education activities, embracing digital mediums.

“We are making a strong effort to connect with athletes and across the world with a program delivered in 10 languages.”

Howman thanked the 4,000 athletes who completed the AIU questionnaire on competition manipulation, sexual harassment, and abuse.

There was also 252 in-competition tests done since June, despite the global race schedule being decimated by the pandemic.

During the fall, Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes were tested in groups while many Athlete Biological Passport profiles were updated. The AIU will focus on specific high-risk nations in 2021 such as Bahrain, Belarus, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, and Ukraine.
