Athletics who compete in the national championships can represent their country at the World Mountain Running Championships. The 2020 edition was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but was scheduled to take place November 13-14 in Haria, Lanzarote, Spain.

The most recent winners were Joseph Gray and Grayson Murphy in 2019.

New Zealand’s Jonathan Wyatt is a six-time winner as is Andrea Mayr of Austria.

In 2008, World Athletics took over the event which was formerly called the World Mountain Running Cup. The event continues to be managed by the World Mountain Running Association.
