Canada had a very good showing on the second to last day of the 2015 IAAF World Track and Field Championships earning three medals, bringing the total so far to seven, the country’s best ever showing.

Eganville, Ontario’s Melissa Bishop earned a silver medal in the 800-metre distance event. She finished in the time of 1:58.12 to Belarussian Marina Arzamasova who won in the time of1:58.03. Third place went to pre-race favourite and defending champion from Moscow two years ago Eunice Sum of Kenya, her time was 1:58.18.

Sum appeared ready to repeat as champion having run a new personal best time this year one month ago, which was the fastest performance of the season by the three medallist at 1:56.99. It was at roughly 550m where Arzamasova started to push the pace hard at the front and over the final 150m it became quite clear that the three would medal, but the order was up for grabs pretty much to the line.

Bishop is the 2015 Toronto Pan American champion. In the semi-finals at the worlds Bishop took down the national record by winning her heat in the time of 1:57.52. In 2012 she became just the third Canadian all-time to break the two minute barrier.

In the Decathlon, as expected Ashton Eaton earned the gold medal with a new points world record of 9045 points. This was a performance capped by a very strong 1500m and an outstanding 400m race where he won in exactly 45 seconds, 2.60 seconds faster than the next competitor.

The silver medal went to Canadian Damian Warner who set a new national record with his 8695 point performance. In the final event Warner needed to run under 4:36.9 to break his national record. He was well under that time with his performance of 4:31.51.

The men’s 4 x 100m team earned the bronze medal as the Americans were disqualified for an illegal baton pass; they passed outside of the zone.

For Aaron Brown, Brendon Rodney, Andre De Grasse and Justyn Warner this medal in the time of 38.13 is a little redemption as they were denied gold at the Toronto Pan Am Games in July after they were disqualified following two American-led protests. Canada was also disqualified from the 2012 London Olympics, costing the team a bronze medal.

Jamaica earned gold with a 37.36 performance; silver went to China who finished in 38.01. It was a fairly close race as all teams were under 39 seconds.

In the men’s 5,000m Mo Farah won again, this time with a performance of 13:50.38. He is back-to-back double gold medallist from the 2013 Moscow World Championships as well as the 2012 London Olympic Games. Kenyan Caleb Mwangangi Ndiku finished second in 13:51.75 while Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia earned bronze in 13:51.86. Canadian Mo Ahmed finished in the time of 14:00.38 and 12th overall.
