The Prairie Inn Harriers running club, with support from BC Athletics and the University of Victoria are hosting a BC Youth Distance Weekend on Friday and Saturday October 9th and 10th in Victoria.

Two-time Olympian Bruce Deacon, who is the head coach of the high performance youth team, will be hosting the event, which starts off with a 30-minute jog at UVic on Friday at 5:00 PM, followed by dinner and games from 5:45 to 7:00 PM. Saturday’s schedule offers a full slate of activities and an expert panel. “This is an opportunity to hear a top-class line-up of speakers as well as have an opportunity to train with some of BC’s best young distance talent in Canada,” shared Deacon.

From 7:00 to 9:00 PM on Friday there will be a workshop with Canadian Olympian Cameron Levins.

Levins is one of Canada’s all-time greatest distance runners. He owns the national 10,000-metre record with his 2015 performance of 27:07.51, Commonwealth Games silver medal and is a 2012 London Olympian in the 5,000-metre and 10,000-metre events. He is also an NCAA Division 1 champion.

Saturday will include a 9:00 AM breakfast, which is sponsored by BC Athletics, the provincial governing body of the sport, followed by a panel discussion with former UVic Vike Thomas Riva, who is a national 1500-metre champion. Also on hand will be Robyn Meagher, Olympian and Commonwealth Games silver medallist. The panel will also include Simon Hoogewerf, two-time Olympian and World Indoor Championships bronze medallist and Heather Hennigar; she is a World Indoor Championship competitor in the 800-metre distance and is currently the National High Performance Hub Coach for Victoria.

Cost: The cost for the weekend will be $30.

For those wishing to travel to Victoria, BC Athletics will provide a ferry subsidy per athlete and coach. For those wanting to walk on to the ferry, the Youth Team will arrange a pick-up and a drop-off at the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal.
