US runner Maksim Korolev and Peru’s Gladys Tejeda produced dominating performances to take the senior titles at the Pan-American Cross Country Cup in Barranquilla, Colombia, on Sunday the 22nd of February.
The event happened at a circuit that is located adjacent to the Magdalena River, over a loop of 1.7km and in hot conditions.
Tejeda won the women’s 7-kilometre race in 21:18 putting 15 seconds between herself and USA’s Kellyn Taylor, who was second in 21:33.
The Peruvian 10,000m record holder, coached by the famed Mexican former marathon runner Rodolfo Gomez, was always in the leading group during the four-lap race.
During the second lap, Tejeda started to set a faster pace, reducing the lead pack to six athletes, before moving clear of her rivals….
Canadian story at NACAC:
Justyn Knight of Vaughan, Ont., and the Canadian junior women’s team braved warm weather conditions to claim gold at the inaugural APA Pan-American Cross Country Cup.
Knight earned individual gold in the junior men’s race finishing 11 seconds in front of his nearest competitor. Nathan Tadesse of Surrey, B.C. (10th), Ben Preisner of Milton, Ont. (11th), Rory Linkletter of Calgary, Alb. (16th) also contributed to the team score to help secure silver for the junior men’s team. Jules Burnotte of Sherbrooke, Que., placed 41st and Jeremiah Ort of Carman, Man., did not finish.
Powered by the podium finishes of Hannah Woodhouse (silver) of Clarksburg, Ont., and Branna MacDougall (bronze) of Kingston, Ont., the Canadian junior women claimed team gold over the USA 24-27. Canada put a total of six women in the top 25 with Nicole Hutchinson of West Vancouver (8th), B.C., Jennifer Baragar-Petrash of Winnipeg, Man., (11th), Claire Smith of Ottawa, Ont. (16th) and Mirelle Martens of Grande Prairie, Alb. (24th).
2015 Hershey Indoor Canadian Champs wrap-up in Montreal
The 2015 Hershey Athletics Canada Indoor Championships wrapped up on Sunday following a great three days of competition in Montreal. The crowds that filled up Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard witnessed a number of world-class athletics performances and a couple of Canadian records.
Less than 24 hours after setting the Canadian junior record in the 5000m Race Walk, Marek Adamowicz of St-Bruno-de-Montarville, Que., broke another one. His time of 12:46.61 was good for victory and a new junior 3000m Race Walk record. Rachel Seaman of Peterborough, Ont., came ever so close to breaking the women’s Canadian record in the same event. Clocking a time of 12:33.03, Seaman was only a few seconds off the Canadian all-time best she established last season.
Commonwealth Games and Pan-American Games medallist Angela Whyte looks poised to make a run at the heptathlon this summer with a solid leap of 5.81m to win the long jump. The junior women’s long jump competition was close between Emanuelle Massé and Magali Roche. Out of 12 jumps the pair only managed three fair jumps. On her final attempt Massé eclipsed Roche’s best by 1cm to take the title with 5.84m.
Christabel Nettey Breaks Canadian Indoor Record
Her twitter handle is @queenchristabel. And Christabel Nettey had to definitely feel like one last week.
The 23-year-old from Surrey leapt 6.99 metres on Thursday to win the Galan meet in Stockholm, Sweden, and shatter her own Canadian indoor long jump record for the second time in a month.
The daughter of Ghanian immigrants, and a graduate of Johnston Heights Secondary and the University of Arizona, jumped 6.78 metres in Albuquerque, N.M., in January to better her previous record of 6.62 metres that was set one year ago.
