Nate Brannen set the tone for the day, this Saturday February 15th, in New York at the Millrose Games with a fast one mile run (1609m) finishing in the time of 3:54.22, breaking his own personal best of 3:55.1, which he set nine years ago in 2005. He qualified for the 15th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics, which will be held March 7–9 in Sopot, Poland. The standard for the metric mile – the 1500m distance can be achieved in the mile, with a time at least as fast as of 3:58.00.

Meanwhile, Christabel Nettey of Surrey, BC broke the Canadian indoor long jump record in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her jump of 6.62 metres exceeds Tabia Charles’s 2010 best that she set in Ithaca, New York, by two centimetres.

cnettey_cdnjr09-copyKitchener, Ontario’ s Ben Flanagan, who competed for Michigan State University broke the Canadian Junior 5000 metre mark that was previously held by Rob Earl in 1978. Flanagan improved on the record by 2.36 seconds as he ran 14:20.94. Several athletes made the qualifying unnamedmarks to enter the World Indoor Championships.  Mike Mason of Abbotsford, BC jumped a season best of 2.30m to win the Millrose Games.

Jenna Westaway, who attends the University of Calgary, took second at Millrose with 2:01.97, 800 metre, dipping under the standard of 2:02.00 and setting a new personal best time.

Nicole Sifuentes of Winnipeg ran 4:28.97 for the mile in New York beating the qualifying mark of 4:30.00 to enter the 1500 metre event at the World Championships.

Cam Levins of Black Creek, BC ran an outstanding 2000 metre race at Millrose, finishing just behind Bernard Lagat.  Levins’s time of 4:55.35 equates to a 3:52.94 mile and is great preparation for the World Championships.

Aaron Brown of Toronto won the 60 metre sprint in Albuquerque with his time of 6.55 seconds to move to the top result in this event in Canada.  On Friday his 20.53 seconds set the Canadian record for the 200 metre and is the fastest in the world this indoor season.
