Katelyn Tuohy ran the eighth-fastest 5000m race in NCAA history by winning the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, NC in the time of 15:14.61 on Friday.

The meet record set just last year was 15:30.87 by teammate Hannah Steelman of North Carolina State University. It was decimated in the process.

Michigan State’s Jenna Magness also bettered the meet record but was well back finishing in second place in 15:26.21. John Hopkins’ Ella Baran took third in the time of 15:49.09. Steelman was in the race, however, finished in seventh place in the time of 15:54.53.

Nine athletes finished in under 16 minutes.

The performance was a new personal best for Tuohy who is a 20-year-old New York native. She was injured for the beginning of her NCAA career, however, finished 20th in the NCAA Cross Country Championships in her only race to that point.
