The Italian anti-doping agency has provisionally suspended Kenyan cross-country phenom Luch Mawia. She tested positive for efedrina and oxycodone.
The 26-year-old holds a half-marathon best of 1:09:38 and 5000m and 10,000m bests of 15:33.93 and 32:33.37, respectively, both from 2022.

“The National Anti-Doping Tribunal, accepting the instance proposed by the National Anti-Doping Prosecutor’s Office, has provisionally suspended the athlete Lucy Mawia Muli (FIDAL member) for the violation of articles 2.1 e 2.2 (substance detected: EFEDRINA, OXYCODONE AND ITS METABOLITE OXYMORPHONE). The test was carried out by NADO Italia.”
Efedrina also known as ephedrine is known as a stimulant and weight-loss drug. Oxycodone is a narcotic drug used to mask severe pain.
The combination of ephedrine and oxycodone is uncommon among distance runners.
