Winnipeg’s Victoria Tachinski – named after the City of Victoria – continues to demonstrate her prodigious talent as a junior. In April of last year, Athletics Illustrated wrote that Tachinski should be on every recruiter’s radar, she continues to demonstrate the point.
The Vincent Massey Collegiate student last year had already set three Canadian indoor records for the distances of 300, 400 and 600-metres. She also set the Canadian 800m outdoor record for runners under the age of 16 with her 2:07.90. She had just turned 15 during the summer of 2014.
Today, she became the national junior 800-metre track and field champion. Furthermore, she qualified for the world junior championships.
“I felt very good in the semi-final. I followed my race plan so now I’m advancing to the final today. I’m very excited to run with the best U-20 girls in the country and it should be a good challenge for me as I prepare for Junior Worlds,” Said Tachinski before her final.
She won in the time of 2:06.73 over Jazz Shukla, who finished in the time of 2:08.67. Shukla, from Toronto was representing the University of Toronto Track Club, while Tachinski is with Stride Ahead Sports. The third place finisher was Madeleine Sumner of Calgary International Track Club. She finished in the time of 2:09.04.
Asked about her race plan, Tachinski said, “In the race my plan was to follow the pack, then kick with 300m to go.
And I would say my plan worked very well as I’m advancing to the final today. Running two 800m in two days should really prepare me and test my fitness for Poland.”
Tachinski ran a tactical race on Saturday, as she finished in the time of 2:12.55, nearly half a second behind Nanaimo’s Alyssa Mousseau, who won, Tachinski was second.
The IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships take place later this month in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
