Sebastian Coe, president of World Athletics, has promised the organizers of the Tokyo World Athletics Championships that they will host all medal events.

During the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games hosted in 2021, there was a late change to the venue for the marathon and racewalk events to 800 kilometres north in Sapporo. The International Olympic Committee was trying to avoid the heat issue that took place during the 2019 Doha World Athletics Championships. As it turned out both Sapporo and Tokyo were 34C on race day.

Following a meeting with Koike in Tokyo, Coe told organizers that there are no plans to move any events outside the city in 2025.

“We will be in Tokyo,” Coe told the Kyodo News.

“Tokyo is the city that bid.

“We will make this work in Tokyo.”

Japan hosted the championships two other times. They hosted in 1991, which was highly successful, and Osaka which was staged it in 2007.

The 2023 World Athletics Championships will be held in Budapest.
