Below is a list of 34 Kenyan athletes who are currently provisionally suspended for doping-related offences. The list is taken from the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya’s database of 56 provisionally suspended athletes in various sports, mostly athletics. It appears that none of the athletes have been listed or announced by the Athletics Integrity Unit at this time. Additionally, Athletics Illustrated Magazine has never reported on any of the athletes listed outside of race reports.

It appears, just by this list alone, that Kenya has a bigger problem than originally thought, which is difficult to believe considering an estimated 400 to 500 Kenyan athletes have been suspended for doping-related offences since 2012.

Provisional suspension can result in an admission of guilt, wherein the athlete receives a shorter ban than the standard four years. Some will have aggravating circumstances, for example, testing positive for two or more banned substances, or tampering. Others are suspended for whereabouts failures or Athlete Biological Passport anomalies in the blood values.

Whereabouts is missing three out-of-competition tests in 12 months. The Athlete Biological Passport keeps a continuous monitoring of blood values. Any changes in blood values that are not within natural human changes will cause an investigation.

Eleven of the 34 athletes tested positive for the corticosteroid triamcinolone. It is used in endurance sports to fight off general fatigue and cut body weight.

AAS stands for anabolic-androgenic steroids, which are synthetic or natural derivatives of testosterone. Seven of the athletes preferred that drug of choice. The three who used EPO were after higher red blood cell production, which carries more oxygen to the working muscles and is a proven aid.
