Athletics Kenya calls off meet to combine trials for Commonwealth Games and World Championships

Athletics Kenya (AK) and the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) have agreed to host a meet where athletes may qualify for both or either the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and Eugene World Athletics Championships. Both global championships are happening this summer.

Friday’s Commonwealth Games qualification meet at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani has been cancelled. The combined trials will take place in a meet June 24 to 25.

The World Athletics Championships are scheduled for July 15 to 24 in Eugene, Oregon, while the Commonwealth Games will run from July 28 to August 8 in Birmingham, UK.

Doping control is an expensive aspect to putting on a meet and speculation is that combining the two meets will reduce the doping control costs.

Kenya is an A-category country according to the World Anti-Doping Agency and therefore has been under greater scrutiny than they have in the past. As a result, there has been a great increase in the number of suspended athletes.

Kenya is a powerhouse in athletics having won 17 medals during the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, finishing fifth in the athletics portion of the Games.

Kenya finished second during the 2019 Doha World Athletics Championships with 11 medals.

In addition to Kenya, Bahrain, Belarus, Ethiopia, Morocco, Nigeria, and Ukraine were Category-A countries as recently as 2020.
