Australian 19-year-old Cam Myers ran a world-leading time of 3:30.42 in the 1500 metre event at the Muarie Plant Meet in Melbourne, Australia. The run is an Oceanian all-comers record, and is the second-fastest of his career, behind the Oceania U20 record of 3:29.80 he set in Ostrava last year.
Interestingly, Myers began his kick early, right at the bell. In do doing, he dropped competitor Adam Spencer easily during that final 400m lap. Spencer, the recent world indoor bronze medallist in Toruń, finished second well back in 3:37.51. Callum Davies took third in 3:39.03.
Meanwhile, Australian Claudia Hollingsworth, 20, delivered a breakthrough performance to win the women’s 1500m in a meet record time of 4:01.30.
She had to hold off world indoor champion Georgia Hunter Bell (4:01.52) from Great Britain.
Hollingsworth, who set a world outdoor lead of 3:58.09 in Melbourne on March 5, made her decisive move with 200m remaining. Hunter Bell was unable to keep up during the final metres.
Sarah Billings finished third in 4:03.67, just ahead of Linden Hall (4:03.79).
