The decathlon came a close Friday afternoon for Alex Bloom with the senior placing third overall at the Jim Click Multis inside Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. The overall leader through the first day of competition, Bloom posted a personal best in the discus to remain in the lead, but was unable to finish the 1,500m run at the end of the meet to fall the third.

Bloom opened the day by running 15.29 to win the 110m hurdles and collect 815 points before stepping into the discus ring where he launched the plate out to 39.14m (128-05), the second-best mark of the day in the competition. His discus mark was a huge PR as he improved over his previous best by nearly seven feet (6’ 11”). The new mark tied him for fifth on the program’s decathlon discus Top 10 as he threw the exact mark his current coach Chris Wineberg threw in 2004.

From there, however, Bloom saw the lead slip away as he was third in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.35m (14-03.25) to score 716 points, which kept him in the lead by 141 points over Kansas State’s Aaron Booth. In the penultimate event, the javelin, Bloom recorded a best of 43.24m (141-10) for 489 points, but Booth pulled ahead by 58 points with one event to go. In the final event of the day, the 1,500m run, Bloom toed the line and began the race, but was unable to finish and scored zero points to finish the two-day event with 6,689 points.
