Athletics Canada, Run Ottawa, and Canada Running Series announced together today that the 2021 Canadian 10km Championships will move to Toronto as part of the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on October 17.

The event was originally to be held in Ottawa at the end of May but was cancelled due to pandemic restrictions. Ottawa will host the 2022 Athletics Canada 10km Championships, as part of Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend next May 28-29.

“It took all three organizations working together to provide an opportunity for athletes in Canada to compete,” said Athletics Canada Chief Operating Officer Mathieu Gentes. “With the help of Run Ottawa and the Canadian Running Series, athletes will be able to compete for a national championship and prize money that otherwise would not have been able to happen.”

All of us at Canada Running Series are really excited about this opportunity to co-host the Athletics Canada 10km Championships and collaborate with our good friends at Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, as well as Athletics Canada,” said Canada Running Series Race Director and President Alan Brookes. “It has been a tough two years for all of us, and it will take this kind of strong, unselfish collaboration to successfully restart in-person road racing. It is beyond exciting that three of the leaders in our sport are coming together to put on an epic 10K. We hope that, like Tokyo 2020, it will be a symbol of our collective resilience, determination, hope and commitment to move forward, that we can offer a showcase road race as a gift to our amazing Canadian running community. ”

“We are excited that Canada Running Series will be hosting the Athletics Canada 10km Championships in partnership with Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend,” said Run Ottawa’s Executive Director and Race Director Ian Fraser. “After nearly two years, we’ll finally hear the wonderful footsteps of in-person racing on our Canadian roads. Throughout the pandemic, race directors from all across the county have supported each other through some pretty dark days. This collaboration with our amazing friends in Toronto highlights that special bond. We look forward to hosting again in 2022 back on Ottawa streets. ”

Out of an abundance of caution, the 2021 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon is limited to Canadian residents only.

The Championship Race will have a combined prize purse of $ 30,000 to be distributed to the top Canadian Athletes. To qualify for prize money, an athlete must be a Canadian citizen, member of Athletics Canada, and registered as an elite runner.

Elite athlete applications are available now.

Only applications submitted through the online elite application form will be considered. Emails or telephone calls will not be accepted. All athletes must submit a race time run within the past 24 months on a certified course, preferably the same distance as the race applied for.

An Elite Athlete application does NOT guarantee entry. All applications must be approved by the CRS Race Director and Elite Athlete Coordinator. Sub-elite applications may receive a discounted entry or preferred starting position, with the Open and Masters Athletes.

Best efforts will be made to inform applicants the first of each month and the day after the application deadline.

Applications will close on Sept. 17, 2021.
