Doris Lemngole, representing Alabama during the NCAA Championships 5000 metres, was in the winning position when she stepped off the track and over the rail. She apparently ran several steps on the inside of the field.
She was removed from the results for stepping on or over the inside curb (Rule 15.5-3g), and Alabama’s protest was upheld. New Mexico’s Marion Jepngetich was subsequently awarded the national championship.
“It is what it is,” she aid post race.
Lemngole recorded a 15:11.71 performance, Jepngetich finished in 15:13.01 for second, and Mercyline Kirwa took third in 15:13.72. She represents Iowa State. The latter two are personal best performances.
The first eight finishers are from Kenya. Finishing in ninth was American Katie Bohlke representing Virginia Tech. She clocked in a 15:18.71 personal best performance.
