British runner Elliot Giles clocked a 3:51.3 performance to break the road mile record in Düsseldorf, Germany on Sunday.
The men
After failing to advance, during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in the 800-metre event, Giles has been looking for some redemption. The opportunity presented itself in Düsseldorf on Sunday.
He plans to move up to the metric mile (1500m). The idea now seems like a natural fit as he set that new world road mile record of 3:51.3. The distance is just 109m longer than the 1500m.

Racing at the New Balance KÖ MEILE meet, the 30-year-old improved upon the previous record of 3:54.6. The former record was set on April 27 this year by 2024 Paris Olympic Games 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya at the Adi-Dassler-Straße 1 Road to Records event in Herzogenaurach, Germany.
Giles led from gun to tape by setting a blistering pace and did not let up, but he could hear his competitors on his heels.
Giles’s personal best in the track mile is 3:51.63. His PB in the 1500m is 3:30.92.
Finishing in second place was American Yared Nuguse in 3:51.9, while Kenyan Vincent Keter took third in 3:54.9.
The women
The top three women were Marissa Damink, Esther Guerrero and Anna Bennett Camp in 4:30.3, 4:31.2 and 4:32.8, respectively.
For Damink of The Netherlands, the performance was a new personal best. Her fastest 1500m time is 4:05.84, while her fastest track mile is 4:31.85. Guerrero has run on the track as fast as 4:22.28 in the mile event. Camp Bennet’s bests are 4:26.95 in the track mile and 4:04.99 in the 1500m event, which is an indoor or “short track” best.
The road mile is a newer event in the World Athletics schedule. It became an official world record-certified event one year ago.
