The Kenyan double Olympic silver medallist over the 5000-metre distance, Hellen Obiri, clocked a solid 30:44 on Saturday on the roads in the NY Mini 10K.

The 35-year-old On Athletics Club member dropped American Weini Kelati with a strong kick over the final minutes of the race. Obiri finished the second half in 15:09.

Ethiopian Gotytom Gebreslase took third in a new personal best of 30:54.

The 28-year-old Kelati set an American record and a new personal best with her 30:49 finish time.

“First of all, I’m so happy to win this race because the elite were so strong. Also, coming after Boston and Manchester (10K), I felt like, let me try to give my best.  For the last two weeks, I have been working on my speed.”

Her personal best is 14:30 from the Weltklasse, Sechseläutenplatz event in Zürich, Switzerland in 2021. Her best 5000m is 14:18.37 from the 2017 Rome Gold Gala. Obiri ran 30:15 in Manchester in 2022. She won silver at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, clocking 10,000m best of 30:10.02. Obiri won Olympic silver at the 2016 Rio and 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games in the 5000m event.

Obiri trains in Boulder, Colorado, but maintains her Kenyan citizenship. Kelati sought asylum in the US in 2014 at age 17. She is originally from Eritrea. The first American-born athlete across the line was Taylor Roe, who took fourth place in 30:58.

Roe set a new personal best time in the race. She currently holds the American record in the 10-mile road race, which is also the North American fastest known time at 49:53. She set the record in April 2025 in Washington, DC.
