The Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial Diamond League meet took place Saturday, August 16, in Chorzów, Poland. The great Polish hammer throw athlete, a Sydney Olympic gold medallist, was probably looking down on the 40,000-plus crowd, pleased to see the Canadian Olympic gold medallist taking in the event. Camryn Rogers threw for first place with a best of 75.39, nearly three metres farther than her competition.

Keely Hodgkinson returns

Meanwhile, the great Keely Hodgkinson returned to competition after more than a year of injury, like she had never left the sport. With her hamstring injury behind her, she took to the track with a vengeance and ran a very fast 1:54.74, nearly a personal best.

Hodgkinson’s personal best was set last summer in London and is the British national record of 1:54.61. In February, the 23-year-old Olympic gold medallist was to chase the long-standing world record; however, she was still injured and had to withdraw from the inaugural Keely Hodgkinson Klassic.

Jarmila Kratochvílová from the former Czechoslovakia continues to hold the world record of 1:53.78 set back in 1983 in München (Munich). She has long been suspected of taking performance-enhancing drugs.

The second-fastest time in history was set in Moscow by Soviet runner Nadezhda Olizarenko in 1980, which Kratochvílová bettered. The time was 1:53.43. Two performances by South Africa’s Caster Semenya are faster than Hodgkinson’s best at 1:54.25 and 1:54.60. Semenya, while never suspected of doping, lives with DSD or differences in sexual development. She naturally produces very high levels of the male hormone testosterone, and it is believed to aid in her ability to race at an international level in the middle distances.

Kenyan Pamela Jelimo and Cuban Ana Fidelia Quirot have also run faster, once each at 1:54.01 and 1:54.44, respectively. As widely reported, Russia has been banned for systematic doping, and Kenya has a major doping issue with over 400 suspended athletes in the sport of athletics banned since 2016.

Hodgkinson sits sixth on the all-time list as an athlete, with the seventh-fastest performance in history.

For her to come back after a year nursing an injury and nearly run a personal best puts her in a strong position to win the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships in September. Her performance is a meet record and the world lead for 2025. While she is the defending Paris Olympic champion, she has yet to win a world championship gold. She will look to win after having finished second in the 2022 and 2023 Eugene and Budapest events.

Kenyan Lilian Odira took second in a new personal best time of 1:65.52, while Oratile Nowe took third in a Botswana national record of 1:56.76.

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden of the USA won the 100m dash in a meet record time of 10.66 seconds. Her best is from August 1 this year in Eugene at 10.65.

Other notable performances

Kenyan Faith Kipyegon attempted the world record in the 3000m event. She ran a meet record, world lead and personal best time of 8:07.04. Her previous best was 8:23.55 in the not-too-commonly-contested distance; she had only raced twice before in her life. Australian Jessica Hull, who finished second to Kipyegon in the Paris Olympic 1500m was on pacing duties.

The world record was set in 1993 by China’s Wang Junxia, who ran 8:06.11 in Beijing, China, under a cloud of mystery, as a number of performances by Chinese athletes were under question. They broke world records in distances from 1500m to 10,000m in meets only in China. All athletes were coached by Ma Junren.

It later came out that Wang Junxia, who also set world records at the time, said that the team was doped, including her.

In a men’s tactical 1500m race, several of the top athletes raced in what is suspected to be a toned-down effort, to preserve themselves for the world championships. The finish came down to a sprint, as six athletes finished in “3:33.”

American Yared Nuguse won in 3:33.19. Taking second was Kenyan Timothy Cheruiyot in 3:33.35. Third was Norwegian Narve Gilje Nordas in 3:33.41. Kenyan Reynold Cheruiyot, American Josh Hoey and Australian Cameron Myers all finished under 3:34.

Norway’s Karsten Warholm set a 400m hurdles Diamond League record at 46.28 for the win, and the Netherlands’ Femke Bol set a meet record in the women’s 400m hurdles at 51.91 in a 2025 world-leading performance.
