Lima, Peru has pulled out as host of the 2024 Under-20 World Athletics Championships.

Currently, there is civil strife related to the outster of preisdent Pedro Castillo. Additioanlly, the country has nearly half a million people displaced due to flooding.

The event was to be held August 26 to 31, 2024.

“We would like to thank the Peruvian Federation and the Local Organising Committee for the extensive time and effort they have already dedicated to this event and for their ongoing commitment to global athletics,” World Athletics said.

“World Athletics is in discussion with a replacement host for next year’s event and will provide more information in due course.”

There were anti-government protests that saw man civilian death and distruption of Peru’s most critical sectors are only now starting to return, however, the damage is done. It will take for the South American country to return economically-speaking.

The mining and tourism sectors were hit hard. Political instability continues.

Peru has had seven presidents in seven years. Even the latest President Dina Boluarte in December following the ouster of Castillo, saw the country devolve into a state violence unseen in decades.
