First, Kenyan Ishmael Kipkurui won the men’s 2025 NCAA 10,000-metre championship on June 12 in 29:07.70, and then Pamela Kosgei won the women’s title the next day.
Both athletes represent the University of New Mexico.
Kosgei won in a time of 31:17.82.
While Kipkurui sat comfortably for 24 laps before unleashing his kick for the win, Kosgei left nothing to chance. After 16 laps, Kosgei dropped the field and ran away to victory, and the meet record was 31:46.09 by Parky Valby.
Grace Hartman led the race for most of the first 5000m. She was clearly keeping her effort within a certain pace because she checked her watch twice per lap. She ran through 5000m in 15:37.9. On May 4, 2025, Hartman recorded her 5000m best, which is 14:58.11, which she accomplished at the Morris Williams T&F Stadium in Durham, NC. In Raleigh, NC on March 28, she ran her 10,000m best of 31:20.60.
Kosgei and Hartman separated themselves from the field, and it was a two-horse battle until the 16th lap, where Kosgei picked up the pace. Hartman trailed in at 31:32.15.
Leading for half the race may have left her with little to challenge Kosgei with.
On March 29, the 20-year-old Kosgei set her 10,000m best at 31:02.73 in Los Angeles.
