Sifan Hassan was named 2024 Sportswoman of the Year on the Sportsgala on December 18.

Hassan redefined excellence in 2024 with an extraordinary season that showcased her unmatched versatility and determination.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she competed in three events. Hassan earned bronze medals in the 5000m and 10,000m, and made history in the marathon by taking gold with an Olympic record time of 2:22:55.
Reflecting, Hassan said, “I’ve had such a great year, and it’s truly special to end it with this award and to represent all Dutch athletes. I’m grateful for all the support I’ve received throughout the year!”

The Sportsman of the Year was pro cyclist Harrie Lavreysen.
Hassan’s Olympic marathon victory was especially significant as the race was held on the final day of the Olympics for the first time. The change is considered a symbol of empowerment. Hassan is the only athlete to receive her gold medal in front of the entire world, during the Games’ closing ceremony.
Her achievements earned her global recognition. The recognition includes the title of World Athlete of the Year by World Athletics, Champion for Peace of the Year at the Peace and Sport Awards, and Dutch Athlete of the Year from the Dutch Athletics Federation (Atletiekunie).
