Japanese 16-year-old, Sorato Shimizu, smashed the world U18 100 metre sprint record with a 10-second run in Hiroshima on Saturday.

He tied for the fastest sprint in Japanese history. Four other athletes have run the same 10.00 in the all-time.

Sorato lowered the previous world best of 10.06s jointly held by Puripol Boonson of Thailand and American sprinter Christian Miller. Miller set the mark in July 2023. Boonson matched the performance in September that year.

Meanwhile, Sorato also broke the Japanese high school record of 10.01s set by Yoshihide Kiryu in 2013.
