Judy Jelagat Kemboi tested positive for Hydrochlorothiazide; she is now provisionally suspended, according to the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old’s claim to fame happened at the 2024 Copenhagen Half Marathon, where she clocked her personal best of 1:05:43. A week later, on September 22nd, she ran the Brasov 10K in 30:29.

On Sunday, May 19th, Kemboi set a new course record for the women’s half-marathon at the Rimi Riga Marathon. She finished in 1:07:13, bettering Peres Jepchirchir’s course record from the previous year, which was 1:07:25.

Hydrocholorothiazide

Hydrochlorothiazide is used to treat edema. Edema is fluid retention or excess fluid held in body tissues. The condition is caused by various medical issues, including heart, kidney, and liver disease, and to treat edema caused by using certain medications, including estrogen and corticosteroids.

Kemboi was likely masking other PEDs with Hydrochlorothiazide. Her compatriot Ruth Chepngetich, the world record holder in the marathon at 2:09:56, was recently suspended for testing positive for the same masking agent.
