The next edition of the Diamond League series is the Prefontaine Classic track meet happening in Eugene, Oregon, at Hayward Field on Saturday, July 5.

The complete start lists and information on how to watch is shown below.

Women’s 100 metres

The women’s 100 metre dash featured nine of 10 athletes who have run well under 11 seconds this season. Only Sha’Carri Richardson has not. Julien Alfred leads the field with her 2025 best of 10.75. Her personal best is 10.72. The 2024 Paris Olymic gold medallist is clearly in game shape and is favoured to win. Challenging the 24-year-old sprinter from St. Lucia is American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, who brings a season’s best 10.73, which is the fastest of the field right now. Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith has not run as fast this season, but owns a personal best of 10.72, equal to Alfred.

Richardson has only raced once this season, back in May. She often brings her best closer to a global competition. She will now have to begin the process of racing well for the Tokyo World Athletics Championships in September. Look for her to run sub-11.

Women’s 800 metres

Athing Mu is back. She is the Tokyo Olympic champion and enigmatic racer, who seems to shy away from competition, yet dominates at one meet and withers at the next. Which Athing Mu will toe the line on Saturday? She brings the fastest personal best to the line, having run 1:54.97.

The American will be up against a good field, probably led by Kenyan Mary Moraa, the 2023 World Champion and Paris Olympic bronze medallist always brings her best to the start line.

Women’s 1500 metres

Australian Jessica Hull will mix it up with Ethiopian Diribe Welteji, Brit Georgia Hunter-Bell and Kenyan Susan Lokayo Ejore, who have all run 3:58 this season. But they may all be chasing Irishwoman Sarah Healy, who has a season lead time of 3:57.15, a new personal best. She holds the national indoor 1500m record and the national outdoor 3000m record.

Hunter-Bell is the fastest in the field. She ran her personal best during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games clocking the national record of 3:52.61.

Men’s 100 metres

All nine men have run well under 10 seconds in their career, but three have not this season. The question here is, will Brits Jeremiah Azu, Zharnel Hughes and American Christian Coleman bring a better game to the meet?

The trio need to step it up soon as they are well behind Kishane Thompson this season with his stunning 9.75-second sprint. No one else is even close this season. The 23-year-old Jamaican took silver during the Paris Olympic Games last year.

Thompson is tied as the sixth-fastest man in history. Only countryman Usain Bolt (four times), Tyson Gay (twice), Yohan Blake (once), and Justin Gatlin (once) have run faster.

Thompson ran that 9.75 in front of his home crowd in Kingston, JAM, during the inaugural Grand Slam Track meet this year.

Men’s 10,000m

Perhaps the most intriguing distance race will be the men’s 10,000m event. As twice before, the meet serves as the Kenyan trials for the next global championships, the Tokyo World Athletics Championships happening later this summer.

Meanwhile, the Ethiopian team will be selected from the three fastest athletes during the qualification period; some would-be competitors are in Eugene, ready to take on the Kenyans. As is Ugandan Keneth Kiprop and American Connor Mantz.

Kiprop, at age 20, has already run 27:09 on the roads. He was 20 years and two months old. Expect him to mix it up with the big boys.

As there are not too many opportunities to race the 10,000m, many of the 20 athletes have yet to race the distance this season. Five have. The only notable result this season is 26:50.21 by Kenyan Ishmael Rokitto Kipkurui.

Nine of the athletes have run under 27 minutes at some point during their careers, including Ethiopian Berihu Aregawi, who has achieved a best time of 26:31.13. Right behind him is Selemon Barega with his best of 26:34.93. Little-known Ethiopian Biniam Mehary has run as fast as 36:37.93. He is just 18 years of age and does not turn 19 until December.

An intriguing aspect is that the Ethiopians hoping to go to the world championships need to be top-three nationally during the qualification period. Aregawi leads the way. Five other Ethiopians are in the race. Dethroning Aregawi and racing for their own cause will change the dynamics of the traditional Kenya versus Ethiopia team tactics.

Twelve Kenyans are in the field. It will likely be a rambunctious race with hard surging and perhaps a few elbows coming up.
