The men’s 800-metre race during the Monaco Diamond League meet was faster and more competitive than the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The winner was 20-year-old Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the Paris Olympic Games gold medallist. In Monaco, Wanyonyi finished in a time of 1:41.44.
“I came to run a season’s best and a meeting record. I came prepared. I gave my best today, so I am happy with the result. 800m is now very competitive, so I need to push even harder than usual in my trainings. Sometimes I am thinking about the world record. I think I can break it in the future. Focus is now on the preparations for the next races before the World Championships,” said Wanyonyi.
Only getting faster! 🔥

Rewriting the history books
This is the 10th fastest time in history. He is the third-fastest athlete over the distance all time. Only David Rudisha, with the world record 1:40.91, as well as 1:41.01 and 1:41.09, has run faster than Wanyonyi. Wilson Kipketer ran the same time of 1:41.11 that Wanyonyi had in Lausanne in 2024.
Marco Arop of Canada has run the seventh-fastest time in history at 1:41.20. Otherwise, it is the three Kenyans in the top 10, Rudisha, Kipketer and Wanyonyi. In the top 20 fastest performances, it is Wanyonyi with the second most at five, Rudisha with six and Djamel Sedjati from Algeria with three. Arop has twice run a top 20 all-time performance, with two, Gabriel Tual from France, with one and American Bryce Hoppel with one.
Arop was in the race in Monaco, but he trailed early, knowing the pace was hot. American Josh Hoey finished second, improving his PB to 1:42.01. Sedjati placed third in 1:42.20. Australia’s Peter Bol set the Oceania record at 1:42.55, finishing fourth.
The athletes want to compete well during the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Racing one’s best right now is not likely the optimum way to go about it; however, the racing landscape has changed. Supershoes and Maurten bicarb dominate the conversation, not so much of the conversation is about training details or altitude camps.
Twelve of the top 20 performances all-time have taken place in the past 12 months. Only 29 performances in history are sub-1:42.00, by 11 athletes. Hoey’s Monaco performance was the 30th fastest of all time.

Other Monaco races…
In other Monaco Diamond League races, American Noah Lyles won the 200m in 19.88, a season’s best performance. Letsile Tebogo clocked in at 19.97 while Zimbabwe’s Makanakaishe Charamba took third in 19.99.
In the men’s 5000m, it was Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha clocking in at 12:49.46 for the win. Frenchman Jimmy Gressier took second in 12:53.36 in a near tie with Birhanu Balew of Bahrain in 12:53.51 and Mohamed Abdilaahi in fourth at 12:53.63 for a German national record.
Eight men finished under 13 minutes.
Kejelcha set the Ethiopian record in the 10-kilometre road race in February this year at 26:31 in Castellón, Spain. He set the world record in the half marathon at 57:30 in Valencia in October 2024.
While the 27-year-old has won many Diamond League races, he finished seventh and then sixth at the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games 10,000m, respectively.

Armand Duplantis of Sweden won the pole vault again at 6.05m. His personal best is the world record at 6.28m. No athlete in history has vaulted anywhere near as well as Duplantis. If the heights are not enough to set him apart from all others, his consistency is off the charts.
He has set 48 of the highest 80 vaults in history, including eight of the top eight from 6.15m to 6.28m. Sergey Bubka is the only other athlete with several performances in the top 80, with 28, several all tied at 6.00m.
Femke Bol
The Netherlands’ Femke Bol is the best European and second-best in the world behind only Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (SML). Bol set a new meet record and this year’s world lead time at 51.95. It was a fast race with Americans following in 52.58 and 52.91 to set seasonal best performances by Dalilah Muhammad and Anna Cockrell, respectively.
Bol set the European record at 50.95 last July in Stade de La Charrière, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.
The only athlete to run faster in history is SML. She has done it three times in 50.37, 5.65, and 50.68. In the top 10 performances in history, it is SML, Bol and one performance by Muhammad at 51.58 during the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.
