Which is the hotter ticket for the Brussels Diamond League, the women’s 800m or the men’s 1500m?

While there have not been any so-called global championships in the sport of athletics this year, the season has been busy. There were the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, and the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, UK. Of course, there is the Diamond League, which on the September 4th and 5th weekend will see the championships take place in Brussels, Belgium.

Below is a list of the entrants set to compete. Some events are stacked.

Femke Broeders-Bol and Audrey Werro from Holland and Switzerland, respectively, will go head to head on the 800 metre event. Werro is the fastest in the world at this time with a personal best of 1:53.70, set this season. Broeders-Bol moved from the 400m hurdles to the 800m and has raised some eyebrows with her steady improvement. She has run as fast as 1:54.71 this season at the Zürich Diamond League meet just last week. That performance is the Dutch national record and the 15th-fastest performance all-time. The 26-year-old has run under 1:56 four times this season and eight of 10 times under 1:58.

The 22-year-old Werro has come to the fore this season, defeating Paris Olympic gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson handily. Werro set the national record at 1:53.70 and is now the third fastest in history. Nine out of 10 times, she has run sub-1:58. She has run sub-1:54 three times, and five of eight indoor races have been under 1:58.

Werro has run the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th, and 18th-fastest 800m times in history.

In the women’s 1500 metre event, six of 11 athletes have personal bests in the 3:55s. Three more have clocked in the 3:56s.

Australia’s Jessica Hull may have her hands full with fellow Aussie Abbey Caldwell with her 3:56.12 or Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma with her 3:55.06. Kenyan Dorcus Ewoi with her 3:55.58 or France’s Agathe Guillemot with her 3:56.24. Georgia Hunger-Bell from the UK has had a great season and brings a 3:55.63. Hopefully, the race is not tactical in nature, but a barn-burner, so fans get treated to a fast time, perhaps with Klaudia Kazimierska from Poland and her 3:55.59, still 150m to go. The USA’s Emily Mackay and her 3:56.24 will be want to compete to the end. It is the Diamond League, after all, expect fireworks.

The hottest race may be the men’s 1500 metres. Kenya’s Timothy Cheruiyot is always nipping at the heels of the top runners. He has run 3:30.67 recently and owns a 3:28.28 PB. It will be a battle between Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Cheruiyot and perhaps Cole Hocker of the USA to the wire. Phanuel Kipkosgei will be in the mix. The Kenyan has the fastest PB at 3:27.72. Of great interest will be the Australian 20-year-old phenom, Cameron Myers. Is he over his peak, or will he continue to race well? He has run 3:28.00 this season.

The only athlete apparently missing who should be there is Geoff Kerr, who took Hicham El Gerrouj’s mile world record this summer, clocking 3:42.66. He holds the national 1500m record at 3:27.62 and is the Paris Olympic silver medallist and defending Diamond League, Commonwealth Games, European Championships, and World Indoor Championships gold medallist. He is saving it all up for the ultimate race at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships on September 13.

How to Watch Brussels Diamond League (Memorial van Damme) – Live Stream and TV Coverage Details

The Brussels Diamond League will be broadcast live worldwide, with fans in selected countries also able to watch via the event organizers’ YouTube channel. Coverage begins at 18:00 Central European Summer Time (GMT+2) on both Friday and Saturday.
