Zürich Diamond League Finale: It is a youth movement

The Diamond League finale in Zürich has had some exciting performances in advance of the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships. Case in point, Switzerland’s Audrey Werro, who is having her best season and on Thursday won the 800 metre event in the time of 1:55.91, which is a new meet record time.

Women’s 800 metres

Finishing in second place was Great Britain’s Georgia Hunter Bell in 1:55.96. Taking third was Anaïs Bourgion of France in 1:56.97. All three ran personal bests.

For Werro, the performance is a new national record. The 21-year-old ran one-tenth of a second faster during the 2025 indoor season. She will be a medal threat in Tokyo, to be sure. Only Paris Olympic Champion Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain has run faster from the current crop of athletes.

All eight athletes finished under two minutes.

Women’s 1500 metres

Jessica Hull of Australia was the favourite going in, with Kenyan Nelly Chepchirchir thought to compete for the win. She did. While Hull led for much of the race, she uncharacteristically tied up later in the race and rumbled in for second place in 3:57.02. Chepchirchir nipped under the 3:57 barrier with the win in 3:56.99.

Australian Linden Hall, who is having a strong season, finished in third plac,e clocking 3:57.44.

Eight of 11 women finished sub-four minutes.

Hull appeared to be on for a personal best through 1200m. Her best is the Oceania record at 3:50.83. She simply ran just outside of her ability for 1100-plus metres, and the effort came back to bite her.

Men’s 800 metres

At this stage of the season, it is difficult to tell if some athletes are holding back during Diamond League races. Some athletes, who have made their respective national teams to compete at the 2025 World Championships, are not even racing at this time.

However, Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya, Max Burgin of Great Britain and Canada’s Marco Arop all ran sub 1:43 to go 1-2-3.

Last year, the then 20-year-old ran the finale in 1:41.11. Thursday, he only needed a 1:42.37 for the win. Burgin took second in 1:42.42, while Arop recorded a 1:42.57. This could very well be the order of the Tokyo World Championships. However, the 800m is uniquely competitive, and three different athletes could be on the podium.

Men’s 1500 metres

Niels Laros of the Netherlands continues to run as strongly as he ever has, taking back-to-back 1500m wins during the Diamond League. Thursday, he clocked an impressive 3:29.10 for a new national record. Kenyan Reynold Cheruiyot ran a new personal best of 3:29.91 for second place. Meanwhile, Phanuel Koech took third in 3:30.02.

It is a youth movement. Laros is age 20, while Koech is just 18 and holds the world U20 1500m record at 3:27.72.

Laros holds several national records, four in the senior category and four in the U20 category, which are also European records.

Cheryuiot, the elder statesman of the podium, is age 21. He holds the less auspicious world U20 record of 4:48.14 in the 2000m run.

Femke Bol

There is only one athlete in history who can defeat Femke Bol in the 400 metre hurdles, and she is Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. Expect the two to go 1-2 during the world championships in Tokyo.

Bol has run 50.95, the European record. McLaughlin-Levrone holds the world record at 50.37. They are both in their prime at ages 25 and 26.

The question for everyone is, who will win the third-place position? Additionally, is there any chance that Bol will defeat McLaughlin-Levrone?

We will find out in Tokyo in September.
