The 2019 International Conference of Athletics Excellence is taking place in Vancouver on  Nov. 30 – Dec. 1st weekend at Vancouver College.

Throws

There are some heavyweights in the sport of athletics speaking including Vesteinn Hafsteinsson. He is one of the world’s greatest throws coach. He has coached Olympic and World Champions including Estonian Gerd Kanter who competes in the discus throw. Kanter has thrown the discus as far as 73.38m – the national record. He has earned Olympic and World Championships bronze, silver and gold over his career.

Danish shot putter Joachim Olsen is a multi-medallist in global championships with a best of 21.61m and has earned Olympic silver, Worlds fifth-place finish and Worlds indoors bronze and silver medals.

Hafsteinsson has also coached Swede Daniel Stahl in the discus throw, who owns a best of 71.86m. He has earned Worlds silver and gold medals.

Hafsteinsson was an Icelandic discus specialist. He competed in four Olympic Games.

Endurance

Terrence Mahon may be best known for coaching American marathon record holder Deena Kastor (2:19:36) and Ryan Hall. He also coached Jen Rhines, Josh Cox, Anna Pierce, Alistair Cragg among others.

Kastor earned a bronze medal in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games marathon and is a five-time World Cross Country Championships medallist. She won both the London and Chicago marathons.

Hall ran the marathon as fast as 2:06:17 during the 2008 London Marathon and 2:04:58 at Boston three years later. His half-marathon best of 59:48 is a national record.

Mahon is a well-respective coach who understands and relies on the science as well as the art of coaching.

There is a full slate of various well-qualified speakers for the two days that the conference is on.

Youth Development

Taught by the conference organizer Derek Evely. This is a four-hour intensive seminar on the hot topic of working with youth athletes. According to the conference website, coaches will come away with everything they need to know to start building their own programs.

Derek Evely is a sports educator and expert in the Bondarchuk methodology and elite training systems. He brought Dr. Bondarchuk to North American in 2005 and has worked closely with him ever since. He has used the system to produce successful athletes across all events in athletics, refining the principles and methods to the North American style of coaching.
