Kenyans Benson Tunyo and Cheruto for the win
In the men’s race, Kenyan Benson Tunyo, a favourite going in, led the Zurich Maratón San Sebastián 2023 from gun to tape. He finished in the time of 2:12:14. Twenty-two seconds later, compatriot Geoffrey Yego crossed the finish line in 2:12:36, to take second. Imanol Larrañaga took third nearly seven minutes later in 2:19:15. He earned the local, “Gipuzkoa championship,” for his first place finish among those from the region.
In the women’s event, Emmah Cheruto also dominated from gun to tape. Her primary competition, fellow Kenyan Leah Jerotich, abandoned the competition at 5K. Cheruto crossed the finish line in 2:31:24. Thirteen minutes later, the second-place finisher Esther Rodríguez Díaz recorded a 2:44:25 finish and, almost a quarter of an hour later, the third fastest woman in the marathon, Mylène Da Costa Reis 2:46:38h came in.
The 45th edition of the Zurich Maratón Donostia San Sebastián — the first of the Zurich Las 5 Grandes circuit — took place Sunday. The organisers sold out the 7,000 available bib numbers weeks in advance.
In addition, the race has broken its record of 3,500 participants in the 42K queen distance and has had 28 per cent female participation and 44 per cent of international participants from 60 different nationalities. With overcast skies, a temperature of 8ºC and no wind, more than 5,000 marathon and half-marathon participants took the start at 9:00 am in Hernani Street. Half an hour earlier, at 8:30 am, it was the turn of 2,000 participants in the 10K.
