Canadian marathon runner Trevor Hofbauer of Calgary announced over social media that he is retiring from competition.
The 32-year-old, three-time national champion won’t stray far from the sport, while he transitions. The Hof will continue to be involved with a company called RunCalgary and the Calgary Marathon.
The former basketball-playing 6-foot and 3-inch (190cm) tall Greater Vancouver and Calgary athlete made news when he became the second-fastest Canadian marathon runner all time. It was when he won the national championships during the 2019 Toronto Marathon clocking a 2:09:51 performance that he became known across Canada. Hofbauer made news when he revealed that he stopped wearing his watch during training.
The (2:09:51) performance was later eclipsed by Rory Linkletter with his 2:08:01 performance in Seville last year. Also in 2024, Ben Preisner ran faster in Oita, Japan recording his personal best of 2:08:58. Cameron Levins, who holds the North American record of 2:05:36 from the 2023 Tokyo Marathon has run faster thrice.

Levins first broke the 42-year-long standing national record by Jerome Drayton in Toronto going 2:09:25 in 2018. Drayton set the Canadian record with his 2:10:09 Fukuoka performance in 1975 — now the seventh-fastest performance in Canadian history. During the 2022 Eugene World Athletics Championships Levins clocked 2:07:09. Then there was the Tokyo 2:05:36 run.
Hofbauer is a 2021 Tokyo Olympian.
