OTTAWA – The athletics squad competing at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China registered five top eight finishes. Tristian Slater of North Bay, Ont., Kyra Constantine of Brampton, Ont., Lexi Aitken of London, Ont., Magali Roche of Montreal, Que., and Jeremiah Ort of Carman, Man., all finished among the top eight.
Tristian Slater tied for fourth place in today’s boys pole vault final clearing 4.85-metres. Just ahead of Slater was Spain’s Noel Del Cerro Vilalta who cleared 5.10-metres for the gold medal. Silver was won by Russia’s Vladimir Shcherbakov and bronze by Muntadher Abdulwahid of Iraq both with 5.05-metres.
In the girl’s 400-metres Kyra Constantine finished fifth with a personal best of 53.70 seconds.
Lexi Aitken and Magali Roche both registered sixth place finishes in their respective events. Magali in the girls long jump with a performance of 5.90 metres. Lexi earned sixth place in the girl’s 400-metres hurdles in 1:00.27.
Jeremiah Ort won the B final of the boy’s 3000-metres in 8:31.05. A disqualification in the A final bumped Jeremiah up to eight place overall.
Other Canadian results at the Youth Olympic Games
Emanuelle Massé of Laval, Que., placed second in the C final of the 100-metres hurdles in 14.36 (14th overall).
In the boys 200-metres Shermar Paul of Ottawa, Ont., ran 21.93 seconds for fourth place in the B final (10th overall).
Braydon Rennie of Mississauga, Ont., finished second in the boys B final of the 1500-metres in 3:53.64 (11th overall).
Tegan Wilson of Calgary, Alta., clocked a time of 25.18 in the girls 200-metres, placing fourth in the B final (12th overall).
In the B final of the girls javelin Brittni Wolczyk of Port Coquitlam, B.C., placed second (11th overall) with a personal best of 48.85 metres.
The Youth Olympic Games officially come to a close tomorrow with the 8×100-metres mixed gender team relay.
