A new series of meets called the National Track and Field Tour was announced this week by Athletics Canada.

The tour will be a series of 10 high-performance track and field meets scheduled for the 2022 outdoor season. 

An Athletics Canada news release Friday indicated, “the purpose of the Tour is to provide meaningful competition opportunities for athletes at home, to host events whereby Canadian athletes can earn valuable World Ranking points, and to help develop athletes for future National Team representation. The Tour is scheduled to begin on May 14 and is expected to run until the 2022 World Athletics Championship in Oregon in mid-July.

Canada has been without an organised series of meets for several years after the closure of the National Track League after the Rio Olympic Games. Both the league and the new tour include long-established track meets in Victoria with the Victoria Track Classic, Vancouver and the Harry Jerome International Track Classic and Guelph’s Speed River Inferno, now dubbed the Royal City Inferno Track and Field Festival.

The series also includes meets not previously in the National Track League including a London, Ontario-based meet called the Bob Vigars Classic, Johnny Loaring Classic in Windsor, ON as well as the popular Pacific Distance Carnival and Canadian 10,000m Championships in Burnaby.
