Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Yared Nuguse race to the line in the mile at the Prefontaine Classic; putting on a show. The Bowerman Mile capped the first day of the Diamond League finale in Eugene, OR.

Ingebrigtsen bettered his own meet record with a time of 3:43.73. This is the fastest mile in a quarter century. The Norwegian is now the third-fastest miler in history. The current world record is held by Hicham El Gerrouj from 1999 at 3:43.13.

“It’s a very good race, a very good time, but there’s definitely some things that can still possibly improve,” Ingebrigtsen said.

Meanwhile, Yared Nuguse improved the American record with his time of 3:43.97. The former record was held by Alan Webb set in 2007.

“I came in thinking 3:45 would be a really good race for me, and I was really excited to go out and get that,” Nuguse said. “Then I ran like 3:43, a second from the world record. I’m just like, How the hell did I do that?”

Ingebrigtsen had told Nuguse pre-race “Just stick to me as long as you can and you’ll get yourself 3:46.”

Cheeky, but accurate and turned out to be true.

Taking third was Briton George Mills in a new personal best time of 3:47.65.

All 13 finishers clocked well below 4:00. Eleven went sub-3:50.
