The IAAF World Indoor Championships will be taking place in Birmingham, UK this weekend (Mar 1-4). Canadian women are performing very well this indoor track and field season, currently topped by middle-distance athlete Kate Van Buskirk.

Van Buskirk has set two new indoor personal bests in 2018. The 30-year-old, Toronto native ran the mile in the time of 4:26.92, which is a new national record and then one week later she ran the 3,000m distance in the time of 8:49.02. Both performances took place in New York.

Her mile time bested fellow Torontonian Sheila Reid’s previous national record of 4:27.02 that was set in 2013 at the Millrose Games. Van Buskirk set it at the Dr. Norb Sanders Invitational in New York. She then ran the 3,000m event at Millrose, nearly taking Megan Metcalfe Wright’s national record of 8:48.56 from the 2008 World Indoor Championships.
