The 2025 Paris Marathon—in cool spring conditions—on Sunday, saw Kenyan Benard Biwott drop his kick late to take the win in a personal best of time of 2:05:25. Ethiopia’s Bedatu Hirpa clipped training partner Dera Dida in a dramatic sprint finish to take the women’s title in 2:20:45.
The top 10 men and top 10 women were all African. Six of the first 10 men across the line are from Kenya, while five of the first women were from Ethiopia.
Men’s race
The 22-year-old Biwott took 29 seconds off his personal best. He separated himself from a nine-person lead pack at the 32km mark. Paris is his second marathon and comes seven months after taking the Frankfurt Marathon on his debut in 2:05:54.

Women’s race
Ethiopia’s Bedatu Hirpa dropped Dera Dida, winning in 2:20:45. This performance is just four seconds ahead of her training partner.
They had a very similar result during the 2024 Dubai Marathon. In that race, Hirpa bettered Dida by five seconds.
Kenya’s Angela Tanui took third place, finishing in 2:21:07.
Hirpa and Dida made a decisive move at the 37km mark to break away from Tanui and Tanzania’s Magdalena Shauri, who eventually finished fourth in 2:21:31. Eleven women finished sub-2:30.
Tanui, who is the 2017 Amsterdam Marathon champion, has a personal best of 2:17:57. Meanwhile, the 25-year-old Hirpa ran the Amsterdam Marathon in 2:18:27 just three months ago.
