While many marathon running fans were paying attention to what was happening in Chicago on Sunday, October 12, there were other marathons quietly taking place. After all, it’s marathon (and cross country) season in the Northern Hemisphere.
Some of the other events include the Royal Victoria Marathon in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Also, the Munich Marathon in Germany. There was the Bucharest Marathon in Romania. Finally, in Zagreb, Croatia, their annual event took place.
Meanwhile, there are several more marathons taking place around the globe over the next two weekends including the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon in South Africa (Oct. 18), Bilbao Night Half Marathon in Spain (Oct. 18), Beijing Marathon (Oct. 18), and the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon (Oct. 19). The next big marathon with top-level elite fields will be the TCS Amsterdam Marathon on Oct. 19.
The popular TCS Toronto Marathon is a North American equivalent of Amsterdam, with international fields and World Athletics labelling. There is also the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon. Because it is run at elevation, performances are typically not what one would expect from a race full of Kenyans. Nairobi takes place on Oct. 16.
Also, taking place on Oct. 16 are the Irish Life Dublin Marathon, the Frankfurt Marathon, and the Venice Marathon, all on the same Oct. 26 weekend.
The next major or “World Marathon Major” (WMM) of which there are seven at this time, is the New York City Marathon on Nov. 2. Regardless of the WMM labelling, New York is a classic with a dramatic history.
The next superfast marathon is happening Dec. 7 in Valencia, Spain. Valencia is very much in the same conversation as Berlin, London and Chicago in regards to fast results.
