British middle-distance standout Max Burgin and Kenyan Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi are locked in for a highly anticipated men’s 800-metre rematch at the Novuna London Athletics Meet on Saturday, July 18.

The dynamic duo, who put on a clinic at the London Stadium last summer, will face off at the 11th stop of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League circuit. During the 2025 iteration, Wanyonyi secured the victory in a meet-record time of 1:42.00, while Burgin crossed the line in third with a then-personal best of 1:42.36.

Wanyonyi later solidified his spot at the top of the global ranks by capturing the world title in Tokyo, clocking a championship record of 1:41.86. Burgin was equally impressive on the world stage, finishing sixth in a historic Tokyo final where all eight competitors dipped under the 1:43.00 barrier. The Halifax athlete crossed the line in 1:42.29, marking another personal best.

The British runner has carried that momentum directly into his 2026 campaign. Burgin opened his season with a world-leading 1:42.98 to capture his first career Diamond League victory in Rabat, notably relegating Wanyonyi to second place.

Off the track, Wanyonyi celebrated the birth of his child at the beginning of June before returning to the circuit at the Oslo Diamond League. In Norway, the Kenyan star was edged out in a thrilling photo finish, running 1:42.09 to finish one-hundredth of a second behind American teenager Cooper Lutkenhaus, who established a new world lead of 1:42.08.

“I’m really excited to come back to London,” Wanyonyi said. “I have good memories from last year, of course, after winning the race in a solid 1:42.00. Because 2026 is not a World Champs or Olympic year, I’m very focused on the Diamond League circuit.”

“My goal and hope in London is to repeat the victory from last year and to run a very fast time,” the Kenyan added.

Burgin is equally eager to utilize the energetic home crowd to chase another fast performance.

“I’ve had some of the best performances of my career at the London stadium,” Burgin said. “I’m hoping for another big one this year, and having the best in the world alongside me in the race will push me to that extra level, I’m sure of it.”

With both athletes in top-tier form, the London crowd is guaranteed a spectacular tactical battle over two laps. Ticket organizers report that fewer than 10 per cent of tickets remain for the London event, widely recognized as the world’s largest one-day track and field meet.

The 2026 Diamond League series features 15 competitive stops across four continents. The tour began in Shanghai and Keqiao on May 16, following the rescheduling of the Doha meet to June 19, and will conclude with the two-day final in Brussels on September 4 and 5.
